Procedure Overview

Knee Replacement Procedure

Knee replacement surgery is a step-by-step process aimed at restoring the normal function of the knee. The procedure begins with a surgical incision over the knee, allowing access to the joint. The damaged cartilage and a portion of the underlying bone are carefully removed to prepare the surface for prosthetic placement.

Metal implants are then positioned to cap the ends of the thigh bone (femur) and shin bone (tibia), effectively replacing the removed tissue. A high-grade plastic spacer is inserted between the metal components to allow smooth, gliding movement. In some cases, the underside of the kneecap may also be resurfaced with a plastic component.

This procedure significantly reduces pain and improves joint function, helping patients regain mobility and resume daily activities. With proper care, these implants can last 15–20 years or more.

Pre-Surgery Evaluation

What are the Diagnostic Tests Done Before the Surgery?

Before knee replacement surgery, each patient undergoes a complete physical examination along with specific diagnostic imaging and pathology tests. These tests help the orthopedic surgeon understand your current health status and plan the safest and most effective surgery.

  • MRI of the affected joint
  • Blood Profile Test
  • Blood Sugar Test
  • CBC Test
  • LFT & KFT Test
  • Chest X-ray
  • ECG Test
  • DSE Test
  • HIV Test

Some of these tests are recommended for every patient, while others — like the Chest X-ray and DSE test — are only suggested for patients with pre-existing health conditions.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about knee replacement surgery and recovery.

Knee replacement surgery is performed when the knee joint is severely damaged by arthritis or injury, causing pain and mobility issues. It involves replacing the damaged joint surfaces with artificial implants to restore function and reduce pain.

Most patients can resume light activities within 4 to 6 weeks. Full recovery and strengthening may take 3 to 6 months, depending on age, health, and physiotherapy adherence.

Yes, in some cases where both knees are affected, bilateral knee replacement is performed. Dr. Naresh Agarwal assesses your health and suitability for single or staged procedures to ensure safety and optimal recovery.

With modern materials and surgical precision, knee implants typically last 15 to 20 years or more, provided proper care and follow-up physiotherapy are maintained.

The procedure is performed under regional or spinal anesthesia, so you won’t feel pain during surgery. Post-surgery pain is well-managed with medications and physiotherapy support for smooth recovery.
